Samsung unveils 200-megapixel sensor for smartphones

Samsung  introduced  a new sensor for smartphones yesterday (Thursday) with 200 megapixels. The new sensor is called Isocell HP3  and it stands out for having one of the smallest pixels in the industry, with 0.56 μm (micrometer). According to the South Korean brand, the component can help reduce camera modules by up to 20%.

The launch follows on from the company’s high-resolution sensors. Like the  Isocell HP1, unveiled last year , the Isocell HP3 offers a resolution of 200 megapixels. But despite the huge number, this specification will help to produce smaller images with higher quality.

This will be possible thanks to Tetra Pixel technology . The solution is capable of joining four 0.56 μm pixels into one 1.12 μm to take 50 megapixel photos. It is also possible to gather sixteen 0.56 μm pixels into a 2.24 megapixel one, which guarantees 12.5 megapixel images.

And that’s where the cat’s leap comes in. As the pixels get larger, the sensor not only captures more light, but also offers images with greater detail. This technology, it is worth remembering, also appears in smartphones with 108, 64, 50 and 48 megapixel cameras from Samsung and other brands, but in different proportions.

“With our latest updated 0.56μm 200MP Isocell HP3, Samsung will step forward to deliver epic resolutions beyond professional levels for smartphone camera users,” said JoonSeo Yim, Executive Vice President of the Business Team. of Samsung sensors.

Samsung Isocell HP3 can reduce camera modules

Samsung still highlights other advantages in the module. In a statement , the company said the launch is 12% smaller than the previous model, the Isocell HP1, with a 1/1.4-inch optical format. The result of this change will be found in the camera modules, which can be reduced by about 20%.

But these are not the only advantages of the new component. The Isocell HP3 also has a technology to speed up autofocus (Super QPD) and to increase the dynamic range of the sensor (Smart-ISO Pro). For filming, the sensor records 8K video at up to 30 frames per second (fps) or 4K video at up to 120 fps.

“Samples of the Samsung Isocell HP3 are currently available, and mass production is expected to begin this year,” they said.

It is not yet known which will be the first cell phone on the market with the new sensor. However, I confess that I would love to see it in the expected Galaxy S23 Ultra. Especially after  Samsung demonstrated the component’s potential by printing a giant photo of a cat .
