Meta’s new artificial intelligence can translate up to 200 languages
Meta announced a new model of artificial intelligence: the NLLB -200 . This version arrives to improve the translation of content, supporting 200 different languages with results up to 44% more accurate than other technologies of the genre. The company also made the AI code available and intends to award up to US$ 200,000 to the most impactful uses linked to researchers and non-profit organizations.
The new artificial intelligence is part of Meta’s No Language Left Behind (NLLB) system, used to translate content on Instagram and Facebook, for example. This version arrives to raise the level of automatic translation, offering a quality system for most languages in the world.

According to the company, the NLLB-200 performed 44% better when compared to other AI research. In some African and Indian languages, the software achieved 70% better translations.
To evaluate and improve the model, the team responsible for the project also built the FLORES-200, a dataset that allows researchers to analyze the performance of AI in 40,000 different language directions, ensuring that each language has high quality translations.
An AI available to everyone
To propagate the use of new artificial intelligence and help with new technologies, Meta is making the code of NLLB-200 and FLORES-200 available on GitHub . Thus, researchers and developers will be able to improve their translation tools.
The Facebook owner will also award up to $200,000 to the most impactful uses of AI, linked to researchers and nonprofits with initiatives focused on sustainability, food security, gender-based violence, education or other areas in support of the Goals. of Sustainable Development.
Meta intends to insert artificial intelligence in its social networks and in the development of Metaverse. However, the company believes there is room for significant advances in other technologies, such as voice assistants and programs to add subtitles to movies.
There is a demo version of the NLLB-200 on the company’s website . There, you can read some stories and check the AI’s ability to translate.
