iPhone 14 Pro and 14 Pro Max may be the only ones to receive a new chip from Apple

Traditionally,  Apple upgrades the processors of all variants when releasing a new generation of the iPhone. The company, however, can change this recipe with the iPhone 14: only models with the Pro seal will receive the brand’s next chip, the  Apple A16. That’s what  Ming-Chi Kuo says in an analysis made this Wednesday (6).

The analyst’s predictions were revealed in a post on his Medium profile. For him, the future Apple A16 will be exclusive to the iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max. Meanwhile, mid-range models, which tend to be identified as the iPhone 14 and 14 Max, could hit stores with the Apple A15, the same processor as the iPhone 13.

If the prediction comes true, this would be a radical change since Apple started offering more advanced models. Take the 2016 iPhone 7 as an example: the big difference between the Conventional Edition and the Plus variant lies in the larger screen and secondary camera.

The situation is similar to the models released since the iPhone XS and XR, in 2018. At that time, the iPhone XR had an LCD screen and only one photo sensor. The iPhone XS and XS Max have an OLED screen and dual camera. After all, Apple needed to offer differentials to the most expensive product that, since the following year, won the “Pro” seal.

But apparently, Apple is ready to change its strategy once again.

Revenue should be repeated in the next releases

The manufacturer tends to allocate the most powerful chips to fuller models from 2022 onwards. And the analyst himself provides an explanation: in his projections, he says that sales of advanced models tend to increase to a figure between 55% and 60% at the end of the year. Before, the expected proportion was 40% to 50%.

“The latest processor chip will be exclusive to high-end iPhone models in the future,” explained Kuo on Medium. “A high proportion of shipments of high-end iPhone models will be the norm.” That is, possibly the iPhone 14 will not be the only one to bring this differentiation in the processor, precisely to increase sales of the more advanced models over the next few years.

9to5Mac further noted that Apple adopted a similar strategy on the iPad a while ago. No wonder the conventional iPad is on sale with the Apple A13, the same chip as the iPhone 11, while the iPad Air comes out of the box with the Apple M1. At the Apple store, tablets start at R$3,790($698 USD) and R$6,697($1,233 USD), respectively.

iPhone 14 Pro may say goodbye to the notch

But this would not be the only difference between the models. Apple also intends to end the notch on the iPhone 14 Pro, by adding a screen with a hole, just like the Galaxy S22, Xiaomi 12, and other Android phones. Thus, the models will have a larger panel and with less interference, since the clipping will be drastically reduced.

Despite all this, Apple intends to match the RAM memory of the four variants at 6 GB. The next generation still tends to have just two screen sizes: 6.1 inches for the iPhone 14 and 14 Pro and 6.7 inches for the iPhone 14 Max and 14 Pro Max. And…yes, apparently the Mini edition won’t be updated in 2022.

The successors of the iPhone 13 are expected to be released in September.
