One of Dell’s finest laptops has a developer version on the way. I’m talking about the Dell XPS 13 Plus Developer Edition. It was due to this focus on this audience that the model became the first laptop to receive certification to run Ubuntu 22.04 LTS. Pleasant! But what is it?

Ubuntu has a certification program

If you take a good look at Dell’s site (and those of other manufacturers), you’ll see that most of the brand’s computers can come from the factory with Ubuntu Linux as the operating system. Moreover, this distribution can be installed on almost all current PCs.

An Ubuntu-specific certification therefore does not seem logical. But it is. Canonical itself, the company behind the distribution explains why:

“Ubuntu’s certification program ensures that all components of a certified computer work as expected, so the user can be assured of the best out-of-the-box experience.”

The company also explains that it has a certification lab that tests hundreds of certified devices every day. The objective is to ensure that this equipment operates satisfactorily throughout its life cycle.

At this point, you should have figured it out. The certificate attests that the XPS 13 Plus Developer Edition works correctly with Ubuntu 22.04 LTS. The document is valid even for machines that leave the factory with Windows, but whose distribution is installed later.

The user should not experience performance instabilities or driver crashes, for example, unless these issues are caused by external factors such as software that interferes with system settings.

It should be noted that Ubuntu 22.04 LTS is the latest version of the distribution. Its main attributes include the Gnome 42 desktop environment, the use of Wayland as the default graphics server, and guaranteed support until 2027 (hence the acronym LTS, for Long Term Support, in the name).

The Dell XPS 13 Plus Developer Edition

You can sum up the XPS 13 Plus in one word: machinery! It starts with the design, both minimalist and modern. Next comes the screen. The Plus version has a 13.4-inch panel that can have Full HD or 4K resolution, as well as OLED technology.

The laptop can also be equipped with a 12th generation Intel Core i5 or Core i7 chip, 8 to 32 GB of LPDDR5 memory, in addition to an NVMe SSD with 512 GB, 1 TB or 2 TB of storage capacity.

The developer version does not bring any additional hardware functionality compared to the rest of the range. The Developer Edition name is a bit “marketer-friendly,” but it also serves to emphasize that the notebook works well with development tasks.

In fact, it’s a niche that’s getting more and more attention from PC makers. HP, for example, announced a developer-specific Linux and Ryzen 7 Pro laptop in June.

Dell XPS 13 Plus Developer Edition sales begin in August. In the United States, laptop prices are expected to start at $1,389. For now, there is no release date in Brazil.
